There are certain parts of the world and there are certain parts of the country that are prone to floods. There are also areas that are prone to earthquakes. Wise residents in areas prone to earthquakes take out an earthquake insurance policy and wise residents in areas prone to flooding take out flood insurance policies. Often the same insurance companies that sell flood insurance sell earthquake insurance. Flood and earthquake insurance companies also sometimes sell policies insuring against damage caused by other natural disasters such as hurricanes, wildfire and volcanic eruptions. In areas especially susceptible to flooding, common property insurance or homeowners insurance may not protect people against flood damage. In areas that have a history of earthquakes, common property insurance and homeowners insurance may not protect against earthquake damage.

An earthquake or flood insurance policy is generally not something a standard policy will include. However, you may find that a requirement your mortgage company includes is that you take out additional insurance. You will need to research the different types of coverage available to see what your home needs. HO-1, HO-2, Ho-3, and HO-4 will work with some residential and commercial properties, while others will need to look into HO-5, HO-6, HO-7, and HO-8 policies. You can then work with an agent or broker to see if you would do best with a perpetual or fixed term policy. You can look online or in a phone book to find a local insurance company and get a quote on how much they would charge for a monthly premium. You will need to go over how much money you want them to help pay for any property damage that occurs. Repairs and replacement parts can be very expensive depending on the amount of damage that has occurred during a flood or earthquake. Commercial and residential policies will vary as well, depending on the value of the property and the amount of coverage you're asking for. Compare quotes, which may be able to be done online or over the phone, to see which policy is best for you and is a fair price. Homeowners insurance can often be a requirement to obtain with a mortgage contract. Therefore, you will need to shop around and find companies to cover your home within a certain amount of time after you have been approved for a loan from a bank. Since not all hazards are included in standard homeowners’ insurance policies, the premium price will go up when you add additional coverage.
